Season 3 Religious Education Film Festival


A. Mechanics

1. The contest is open to all REED Students under my class for this first semester.

 2. The digital logo must express the objectives of the Religious Education Film Festival.



The Religious Education Film Festival produces, screens, reviews and evaluates short films on interesting topics and issues related to Religious Education courses. 


Produced and directed by Religious Education students, these short films are strictly for academic purpose, that is, in partial fulfillment of the requirements of their respective RE Courses enrolled in a particular semester.



3. The digital logo must incorporate the following important elements:

            (a) Laurel Leaves Design in gold or silver color, depending on your design

4. The digital logo resolution size must be 1600×1280 pixels (325KB) or higher.

5. All entries must be submitted to unofela@yahoo.com for screening. They will become the official property of the Religious Education Film Production.

6. All digital logo entries must be submitted on or before August 4, 2012.

7. The digital logo entries will be judged by online votes (50%) and the adviser (50%).

8. Winners will be announced shortly before the start of the MIDTERM Exam.
             
9. Academic incentives await the three major winners.

A. An Introduction to Photo Essay

What is a Photo Essay?

A photo essay is very simply a collection of images that are placed in a specific order to tell the progression of events, emotions, and concepts. Used by world class photojournalists such as Lauren Greenfield and James Nachtwey, and Joachim Ladefoged to name a few, the photo essay takes the same story telling techniques as a normal essay, translated into visual images.

5 Photo Essay Tips

A photo essay isn’t simply for photojournalists however. Every human being is drawn to stories. Whether you are an amateur or a professional, the photo essay is a brilliant way to bring your images to life and touch your family, friends, and coworkers.

1. Find a topic: Photo essays are most dynamic when you as the photographer care about the subject. Whether you choose to document the first month of a newborn in the family, the process of a school drama production, or even a birthday party, make your topic something in which you find interest.

2. Do your research: If you document a newborn’s first month, spend time with the family. Discover who the parents are, what culture they are from, whether they are upper or lower class. If you cover the process of a school’s drama production, talk with the teachers, actors and stage hands; investigate the general interest of the student body; find out how they are financing the production and keeping costs down. If you photograph a birthday party, check out the theme, the decorations they plan on using, what the birthday kid hopes to get for his or her gifts. All of these factors will help you in planning out the type of shots you set up for your story.

3. Find the “real story”: After your research, you can determine the angle you want to take your story. Is the newborn the first son of a wealthy family on whom the family legacy will continue? Or does the baby have a rare heart condition? Is the drama production an effort to bring the student body together? Or is it featuring a child star? Is the birthday party for an adolescent turning 13, or the last birthday of a dying cancer patient? Though each story idea is the same, the main factors of each story create an incredibly unique story.

4. Every dynamic story is built on a set of core values and emotions that touch the heart of its audience. Anger. Joy. Fear. Hurt. Excitement. The best way you can connect your photo essay with its audience is to draw out the emotions within the story and utilize them in your shots. This does not mean that you manipulate your audience’s emotions. You merely use emotion as a connecting point.

5. Plan your shots: Whether you decide to sit down and extensively visualize each shot of the story, or simply walk through the venue in your mind, you will want to think about the type of shots that will work best to tell your story. I recommend beginners first start out by creating a “shot list” for the story. Each shot will work like a sentence in a one-paragraph story. Typically, you can start with 10 shots. Each shot must emphasize a different concept or emotion that can be woven together with the other images for the final draft of the story.

Remember that story telling takes practice. You don’t have to be an incredible writer to pull off a powerful photo essay. All you need is a bit of photographic technique, some creativity, and a lot of heart. And once you begin taking pictures in stories, your images will never be the same.
In part II of this series on Photo Essays, I will give a practical example of how I apply these techniques in a photo essay of my own.

B. Topic and Shot List

The subject of our Photo Essay Contest is RE Outreach 2011.

The Shot List must include one photo-entry for each of the following categories:

1. The Family (parents and children)

2. The House They Called Home

3.  The Arrival

4. The Baptized

5. The Mass

6. The Christening

7. The Post-Baptismal Picture (the family with the sponsors in the Church)

8. The Reception

9. The Gift

10. Home Sweet Home (Send-off)

Each photo must include a specific title and caption.
Digital Photos Pixel Requirement must not be lower than 1600×1280 pixels or 325KB.


C. Criteria for the Photo Essay

Content (30 pts.): highly creative, non-typical, unique, appropriate to assigned topic, conveys strong, message, engages audience immediately.

Quality of Photographs (30 pts.): photos clear and free of unwanted elements, camera distances appropriate in all photos, demonstrate a variety of techniques, visual impact

Captions (25 pts.): original idea which focuses on the photo, feeling or experience, precise, original fresh words, complements photo, concise

Poetry (15 pts): original idea on the focuses on topic, creates vivid images, and includes features beyond the assigned requirements which strengthen the photo essay.



D. Deadline of Submission, Online Voting and Judging

Deadline: December 12, 2011

Online Voting: December 15 – 30, 2011

Judging: 70% actual judges’ score, 30% online votes

Announcement of Winners: January 2012

RE Trivia Guidelines

Weekend RE Trivia 


A. General Guidelines

1. The trivia is only open to all the members of the Circle of Religious Education Students (CREEDS) enrolled in the current semester.

2. You must create a Facebook account to access the Trivia Question and post your answer.

3. The questions in this trivia will cover anything related to Religious Education as determined by the RE Adviser.

4. The trivia questions will be posted in random intervals beginning Saturday morning (around 8AM) until Sunday evening (around 8PM).

5. Earned points from this trivia will be credited as bonus points to your raw scores in the class standing.

6. At the end of the weekend trivia, a list of participants with their accumulated scores or earned points will be posted in RE Points blog.


B. Answering Mechanics


1. You can only post ONCE. Your first post will be considered your final answer. A follow-up post will be deleted.

2. State your section before your answer. Example: A21 – ADVENT SEASON

3. Answers must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS unless told to write them in small caps. Only complete answer/s will merit bonus points.

4. Only the first ten (10) posted correct answers will merit points.

5. Answers for the previous trivia question will not be accepted anymore once the new trivia questions have already been posted.

6. Any violation of the answering mechanics will disqualify your answer/entry in the current trivia question.


C. Points System

The points to be earned from each trivia question will be determined by the RE adviser at the end of every trivia. The earned points will be tallied at the end of the weekend trivia.

This activity is only for REEDBD 1C0 students enrolled in sections A14, A15, C02, E06 and K13.





I. GUIDELINES

1.      Create a 5-10 minute music video based on Angels.
2.      Upload your video on YouTube and send the link via email: unofela@yahoo.com
3.      A new page will be created to post your entries for this activity where you may ask your friends to “like” your entry to increase your points for judging/evaluation and be on the top three.
4.      Include the following information in your email:
Title of your Music Video
Your Section and Complete Names of Group Members
Full Credits of Your Work
Email Address
Mobile Number for contact purposes
5.      Please use the subject “ANGELS: (Then the title of your video)” in your email.
6.      Submission of entries is until September 29 only. Entries will be available for “liking” as soon as they are posted on October 1.
7.      The top three entries will receive incentive points for the FINAL CLASS STANDING and EXAMINATION.


II. GENERAL RULES:


1.      Music video must be in live action and should not exceed 10 minutes.

2.      Music video must be based on Angels.

3.      Music video must be original. Any group found committing plagiarism will 
         automatically be disqualified.

4.      Any music appropriate for Angels may be used. Originally created music/score is 
         also permitted.

5.      Music video may be in Filipino, English or Hiligaynon. Entries in Hiligaynon must 
         have English subtitles.

6.      Music videos must be submitted in .avi or .mpeg format. Entries in .avi format must 
          have a resolution of at least 720×480 pixels.

7.      Announcement of Results will be on October 7, 2011 via our group Facebook.

1. Nicholas was born in 1245 at Sant’Angelo, Pontano, Macerata, Italy. Who were his parents?

2. His middle-aged parents who were childless made a prayerful visit to a shrine at Bari, Italy humbly seeking Divine providence to give them a child. What was the name of the patron saint of that shrine that the pious couple asked intercession and later named their child after? 


3. What was the name of the prior of the Augustinian monastery in Sant'Angelo who inspired Nicholas to join the Augustinian Order at the age of 18?


4. Nicholas was ordained as priest at the age of 25 in the year 1270 or 1271. Where his ordination to priesthood took place?

10. In 1345 a lay Brother cut off the arms of his body intending to take them to Germany as relics, and the friars then hid his body to prevent further attempts of this kind. In 1926, St. Nicholas’ body was rediscovered and the Church verified that it was his body.  At that time, the arms were reunited with the rest of the body, a silver mask was placed over the his face and the remains of the St. Nicholas are exposed for veneration, at the base of the Altar of Sacrifice, fitting for a priest who had prayed for so many Souls as he celebrated Mass.  Where in the world today are the remains of St. Nicholas preserved?

11. One of the famous titles attributed to St. Nicholas of Tolentino is “Patron of the Souls in Purgatory.” A story was told of an Augustinian friar who had recently passed away appeared to Nicholas and pleaded with his old friend to offer Mass, not only for himself, but for the many other souls who had asked him to implore the aid of Nicholas.  He brought Nicholas into the pits of Purgatory, so that he could see first-hand, the suffering of all those who had asked for his intercession.  Before him were a multitude of souls of all ages and conditions, experiencing terrible torment. After relating this event to his superior, Nicholas was granted permission to dedicate his Masses as well as all his prayers, toward the deliverance of the Poor Souls from Purgatory. What was the name of that Augustinian confrere who requested Nicholas?

12. According to the Peruvian chronicler Antonio de la Calancha, the permanent Spanish settlement in this part of the world with a very unfriendly climate (rigorous, high-altitude climate) was made possible through St. Nicholas of Tolentino. He reported that all children born to Spanish colonists there died in childbirth or soon thereafter, until a father dedicated his unborn child to St. Nicholas of Tolentino. The colonist's son, born on Christmas Eve, 1598, survived to healthy adulthood, and many later parents followed the example of naming their sons Nicolás. Where in the world this particular event happened?  

13. The Middle Ages saw the emergence of two opposing political factions which Nicholas encountered in his priestly ministry for thirty years in Tolentino. These groups first acquired significance in Italy during the reign of the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick I Barbarossa who tried to assert imperial authority over northern Italy and was opposed by Pope Alexander III. The split between those who sided with the papacy, and those who were sympathetic to the Holy Roman emperors, contributed to chronic strife in the cities of northern Italy in the 13th–14th century, reflected in Dante’s Divine Comedy. To remedy the violence and evils brought about by these political divisions, Nicholas devoted himself to street preaching. What were the names of these two factions?
